Best Season to trek ABC

The best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp is pre-monsoon (Spring) and post-monsoon (Autumn). During this season, you will experience warm temperatures with clear views. Thus, you can have stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and Himalayas.

Autumn

The autumn starts in September and ends in November. This season is the ideal season for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp. During this season, the weather is warm, with clear temperatures. The chance of encountering rainfall is also low. Furthermore, the major festival of Nepal falls in this season. This gives you the best chance to deeply immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of local people.

Spring

Spring from March to May is another perfect place to visit the Annapurna region. Similar to autumn, this season also offers clear skies and warm temperatures. Also, this season welcomes blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. The colors of them add vibrancy to the landscapes. This season is best if you want the colorful scenery across the trail. But you should know that the chances of altitude sickness are slightly high because of blooming rhododendrons.

However, besides these two seasons, we recommend not trekking during summer (June to August) and winter (December to February). Summer brings massive rainfall, making the trail muddy and risky. Similarly, winter has lots of snowfall. The trail is slippery, and the frigid temperature adds some difficulty. Make sure you check the temperature before climbing towards the Annapurna Base Camp.

9 Days ABC Trek Difficulty

You can encounter particular challenges if you are trekking towards Annapurna Base Camp. Although the trek is beginner, you can find difficulty crossing the ascends, as the terrain is rugged in some places. Besides, nine days of trekking covering approximately 100 km and a continuous 5 to 6-hour hike also add some difficulty to your trekking journey.

Another difficulty includes the altitude gain. You will have to reach above 4000 meters. Thus, the risk of getting altitude sickness is high enough. Furthermore, weather conditions, especially during the winter and summer, can add an extra challenge. We recommend not taking this trekking trail if you lack physical strength and mental endurance. If you are a movie trekker, always hire a guide. It enhances your safety.

Weather you will face during 9 Days ABC Trek

The weather during the 9-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek can vary significantly due to the altitude and the region’s diverse microclimates. Here’s a general overview of the weather you might encounter during different parts of the trek:

Pokhara: Generally mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) during the day and cooler nights.

Lower Elevations (Nayapul to Tikhedhunga): Warm and humid, with temperatures around 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Occasional rain showers are possible, especially in the afternoon.

Ghorepani and Poon Hill: Cooler temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). Mornings can be chilly, especially at higher elevations like Poon Hill for sunrise.

Tadapani to Chhomrong: Temperatures are similar to Ghorepani, with cool mornings and evenings. The weather is generally dry with occasional clouds.

Higher Elevations (Chhomrong to Annapurna Base Camp): Temperatures decrease as you ascend. Daytime temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), and nights can drop to below freezing, especially at Annapurna Base Camp.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC): The weather is cold, with daytime highs around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) and nighttime lows often below freezing (0°C to -10°C or 32°F to 14°F). Depending on the season, the weather can be clear with stunning or cloudy and snowy views.

Permits for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The two permits necessary for 9 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek are the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS card. Getting this permit ensures your safety and conservation efforts.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

As the trek passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, getting this permit is necessary. The permit fee contributes to conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices. You can get this permit at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or Pokhara or at the entry points along the trekking route, such as in Besisahar or Nayapul.

  • NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 26) for foreigners. For SAARC nationals NPR 1,000

Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card:

  • Cost: NPR 20,000 for group trekkers. For individual trekkers NPR 3000..
