How difficult is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Lukla flights Diversion

In the past years, Lukla flights were operated from Kathmandu city. But since 2019, during the peak trekking seasons, flights to Lukla are often operating from Manthali airport. These peak trekking months are April and May in Spring and October and November in autumn season. Due to the dramatic flow of tourists, there is high air traffic at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and it may lead to diversions or delays of flights to Lukla.

Both domestic and international airport is situated at the same place in Kathmandu. It has only one runway and approach system, which leads backlog on the airport runway, as there are no landing alternatives. Hence, International flights that fly long distances are given the first priority for landing, compromising domestic flights. So, the single runway and one-way approach are the primary causes of flight delays or cancellations at Kathmandu Airport.

This alternate small airfield, located in Ramechhap district approximately 132 kilometers east of Kathmandu, ensures the safety of passengers and crew. While this diversion may add a few hours of drive, it exemplifies Nepal’s commitment to passenger safety and the importance of ensuring a smooth and secure journey to this breathtaking corner of the Himalayas.

Traveller’s Review

It’s my first time to go for big challenge ever in EBC trek. With help and patience of my guide named Prakash Gurung, I reached my dream of conquering EBC: He’s always there waiting for me to catch up. I am deaf and I’d not heard horses or mules behind me so he’s come to my side to protect me from them everytime. He also made a great photographer as he’s taken many good photos of me with Nature! If he happens to be your guide, you can trust him throughout your journey!

Thanks to the entire Glorious Himalaya team for your support. We recently completed 14-day Everest base camp treks along with this agency’s local guide and porter.
They provided a nice hotel in Kathmandu and local lodges during the trek in the mountain regions. Our Guide Roshan and porters were helpful and experienced. Even more, they served fresh and yummy local foods throughout the journey.

Thank you again for organizing such a great adventure in Nepal and we will again visit your country soon.

Trip FAQ's

How safe is Everest Base Camp Trek?

This is another concern topic for the trekkers while planning the EBC journey. Every year, thousands of trekkers traveled to the Everest base camp. And 90% of them succeed in completing their journey without any issues. About 10% of travelers are not able to complete the trek because of their health issues. Therefore, it is often risk-free and doable for all hikers. There is no risk of avalanches and landslides on this trek. Travelers have given the tagline of a dangerous airport in the world for Lukla airport because of its inaccessible location. However, Lukla flights are also safer as well. In recent days, the trail to the Everest base camp is well constructed. During the peak season, it is filled with international travelers.

The most difficult aspect of this hike is likely altitude sickness. Thus, you must make the proper preparations before the expedition. Do some internet research or consult with Himalayan experts for advice on the right equipment, a well-prepared itinerary, and training beforehand. Our 12-day schedule includes adequate time for two days of acclimatization in Namche and Dingboche. You just need to be in good physical and mental health. Eat wisely, drink plenty of fluids and take enough rest during the trek.

Avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks while you are on a higher altitude trip.

What the trip is look like?

The Everest Base Camp trail offers a captivating trekking experience amid breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, but also challenging as well. The route’s difficulty varies from moderate to strenuous, demanding good physical fitness and adaptability to high altitudes. Trekkers navigate through diverse terrains, including forests, suspension bridges, and rugged paths. Most of days, you will hike between 10,000 feet and 16,000 feet elevation during this trek.  And the highest point of this trek is Kala Patthar i.e. 18365 feet. Altitude acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. Weather conditions fluctuate, ranging from clear skies to snowfall. Trail conditions are often rough, not the well-maintained switchbacks you may be accustomed to, and there is a good bit of up-and-down (often 2,000- to 3,000-foot gain or loss in elevation per day). And the teahouses’ accommodations on this trail are basic yet optimum.

Any expedition that involves going to distant wilderness areas is inherently dangerous, especially if it involves ascending to a high altitude. These risks range from rock falls to the potential for a major fall, injury, or illness without access to quick evacuation, medical supplies, or proper medical care once it is offered. Although our trek leader and support team are seasoned veterans of the Nepal Himalayas, a successful trip depends on the cooperation and adaptability of each participant.

Overall, the Everest Base Camp trail presents an exhilarating challenge that rewards adventurers with unparalleled views and a sense of accomplishment amidst the world’s tallest peaks.

How experienced is our trek leaders?

Most of our trekking leaders have over a decade of experience and depth of knowledge, and they were raised in the high mountain regions. Our expert Himalayan trek leaders possess an unparalleled understanding of the region’s terrain, cultures, and challenges. Their seasoned guidance ensures safe and enriching experiences, navigating through breathtaking landscapes and fostering cultural exchanges. With their knowledge, they transform journeys into unforgettable adventures, leaving travelers with profound memories of the majestic Himalayas.

How to prepare for Everest base camp journey?

To prepare for the Everest Base Camp trek, focus on cardiovascular fitness through regular hikes, uphill walking, and stair climbing. Strengthen your leg muscles with squats and lunges. Acclimatize by gradually ascending to higher altitudes before the trek. Pack appropriate gear, stay hydrated, and learn about altitude sickness.

For more information about how to prepare for this trek click here.

How to book this trek with us?

To book this trek with us, go through the BOOK NOW button and make an advance payment shortly. And your remaining payment should pay after your arrival in Kathmandu (before the trek). Once we received your advance booking, we will send you an e-receipt/invoice via email for your confirmation.

And for the remaining payment, we accept visa/master cards as well as cash.

Does your package include meals?

Yes, it is a full-board meal service. Thus, your meals are included throughout the trek in the mountain regions. Every day, you will get 3 meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner). In your Kathmandu hotel stay, you will get breakfast only but all meals during the trek.

Are there any age restriction for this trek?

There isn’t any age restriction for this hike. However, it is a strenuous hike at a high altitude that passes over mountains, rocky terrain through rivers, and alpine woods. Therefore, we advise anyone between the ages of 15 – 55 to take part in this walk. But, if you are a seasoned hiker in your 60s or 70s and in good physical shape, you can also participate in this activity and successfully complete the walk.

Do I need to be insured for this trek?

In case of a severe illness or any casualties, we’ll do everything to move on to the closest hospital to save your life (that has happened to us a few times). And you’re utterly accountable for all the expenses incurred in evacuation/rescue. Therefore, please be certain these costs are covered by your insurance coverage before assigning to the trek. Or even be ready to pay your own after returning to Kathmandu. So make sure that you’ve fully insured which can cover helicopter rescue and medication expenses before performing the excursion.

What would be the average temperature and weather condition on this trek?

The temperature and weather conditions vary according to the season. Normally, during the spring and autumn season, weather will be pleasant, warm, and have clear visibility. Thus, the trail of Everest base camp is busy in these seasons.

If you are going to trek in winter and monsoon season, check the weather forest and trail conditions beforehand and prepare yourself accordingly.

How often Lukla flights get cancelled?

Actually, Lukla’s flights depend on the weather. Lukla Airport is situated at an elevation above 2,800 meters and is surrounded by high hills and mountains. Therefore, it is tough to take land on the ground if the weather is inclement. In the months of March, April, May, October, November, and December flights won’t get canceled as the weather in these months are pleasant and clear. Mostly, Lukla flights get canceled in the monsoon months which are June, July, and August.
