Why You Will Love Mohare Danda Trek
Overview of Mohare Danda Trek
The Mohare Danda Trek is ideal for experiencing the peace of the Himalayas and is among the less crowded treks of Nepal. Developed by Mahabir Pun and opened in 2010, this trek includes eco-community lodges to connect with nature and local culture. Over 10 days, you’ll reach Mohare Danda, a stunning hill station at 3,300 meters, surrounded by Mt. Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri gorge. You’ll explore local villages, alpine forests, and rivers, with breathtaking sunrise and sunset views at your destination.
The trek is the first community-based experience for travelers in Nepal’s tourism history. Each day, you will stay in local homestays along the route. This alternative trek offers a different path than the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. From the Mohare viewpoint, you can see stunning views of mountains like Mt. Annapurna (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,172m), and Nilgiri (7,061m). You will also learn about the local people’s cultures, traditions, and livelihoods. Walking through forests of oak, bamboo, and pine trees makes this trek a wonderful experience.
Is the Mohare Danda Trek more difficult than the Ghorepani Trek?
Both treks are similar in terms of their level of difficulty. The highest point of the Mohare Danda Trek is 3,300 meters, whereas the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek’s is just 3,210 meters. Both of these treks are suitable for beginners. The lodgings and amenities you can access throughout the walk are the only differences between these trips. The tea houses along the Mohare danda path are inferior to those along the Ghorepani Poon hill hike, a well-known short hike in Nepal. The lodges along the Mohare Danda Trek route are still under construction because it is an off-the-beaten-path route.
Ghorepani Trek can be done in 2-4 days, whereas Mohare Danda Trek requires at least 5-7 days to finish. Because of some extra days, you might find the Mohare Danda Trek to be a little challenging. The Mohare Danda Trek offers the most incredible and closest view of the Himalayan range. In addition, you can learn more about ethnic cultures and lifestyles than on the Ghorepani trek.

Why Mohare Danda Trekking is Popular
The Mohare Danda Trek is becoming popular as a quieter and more culturally rich option than the busy trekking routes in Nepal’s Annapurna region. It offers beautiful views of the Himalayas, real cultural experiences, and supports local communities. Here are five reasons why people are choosing this trek:
Cultural Experience
The major reason Mohara Danda is one of the popular treks is the chance to have a cultural experience. The trek goes through traditional Magar and Gurung villages. Trekkers can learn about the unique culture, customs, and daily lives of these local communities. Staying in community-run lodges and homestays allows for more personal interactions and a genuine cultural experience.
Stunning Himalayan Views
This trek offers amazing 360-degree views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including famous peaks like Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). The sunrises and sunsets at Mohare Danda and nearby Poon Hill are particularly stunning.
Less Crowded Trails
Compared to popular treks like Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, the Mohare Danda Trek is less crowded. This lets trekkers enjoy the area’s natural beauty and culture in a more peaceful setting.
Eco-Friendly Efforts
The local communities involved in the Mohare Danda Trek are dedicated to protecting the environment. They work to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable practices, including waste management.
Benefits for Local Communities
The Mohare Danda Trek exemplifies community-based tourism by supporting local businesses and creating jobs while promoting responsible travel. Travelers can enjoy the stunning views of the Annapurna range, lush forests, and diverse wildlife. The trek also offers opportunities to engage with local communities, learn about their customs, savor authentic cuisine, and partake in cultural events.
Permits for Mohare Danda Trek
You don’t need permits for the Mohare Danda trek because it is not in the Annapurna Conservation Area. However, if you choose to visit popular spots like Poon Hill and Khopra Danda along the trek, you will need TIMS and ACAP permits. Both Poon Hill and Khopra Danda are in the Annapurna Conservation Area.
- TIMS means (Trekkers’ Information Management Systems).
- ACAP means (Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit).
If you plan your trip with a local trekking group, they will handle all necessary permits for you.
Accommodations in Mohare Danda Trail
Mohare Danda is a new trekking destination near the Annapurna Conservation Area. Do not expect a luxury experience while you are there. The Mohare Danda trail is an eco-tourism route that passes through traditional Magar villages and untouched forests. The trail reaches up to 3,300 meters and offers a variety of plant life. Most of the area around the community eco-lodges does not have modern transport options. However, the hardworking local people have managed to build simple lodges for tourists to stay in.
During the Mohare Danda Trek, you will stay overnight in a local house that has simple community lodges with more than two single bedrooms. Most lodges have squat toilets outside, so be prepared for limited toilet paper. Considering the remote location, the room is clean, comfortable, and has everything you need. Each lodge offers cold showers, but if you want a hot shower, you must pay about 100-200 Rs (Nepalese rupees) for a bucket of hot water.
When is the best time to visit Mohare Dande?
The best seasons for trekking are Spring and Autumn. The temperatures are comfortable during these seasons, and the skies are usually clear. There is also less chance of rain in spring and autumn. The rainy season is from June to early September. You can trek in Nepal any time of year, but the best time depends on the specific trek you choose. Nepal is a hilly and mountainous country, so trekking in the monsoon and winter seasons brings different challenges.
Spring brings cool weather with clear skies, making it a great time to view the White Mountains after winter. The trails in the Himalayas are filled with blooming rhododendrons and other flowers. You can enjoy sunny days, clear skies, and golden brown forests in autumn. The temperature is just right for hiking and trekking. This season is vibrant with colorful festivals in Nepal, including Dashain, Tihar, and Chhat. While it is possible to trek in summer, monsoon, and winter, conditions can be challenging. Summer can be very hot, monsoons bring heavy rain, and winter features cold temperatures with thick snow.

Traveller’s Review
I have opted for a less busy trek going through Mohare Danda. Glorious Himalaya (GHT) provided almost a perfect route for our group of 5 people. The 6 days walk was beautiful especially at slightly higher altitudes; the paths and forest was lined with Rhododendron and other flowers. Views from mountain tops were spectacular. Maybe because we opted for a less populated trek, the homestay condition is not as well established in the smaller villages we stopped by. Overall the GHT service was excellent!

Great fun. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves nature, crisp air and hiking. A hike that is not too difficult to try, just over 3300m. The mountains are amazing, lodging generally is good with nice bed(which is really critically after a day long hike). Food is also quite nice and simple.
The guide and porter are really friendly, fun and knowledgeable, sharing with us to know more about Nepal, the mountains the culture, the people… although the weather was a bit unpredictable and the rain does makes it tougher to hike and clouds the views of the mountains.
The car journey on the Jeep is unbelievable bumpy and super uncomfortable, anyone with a back problem has to be more careful.
Overall, a fantastic trip and wonderful time up in the mountains
