Annapurna Base Camp Via Poon Hill Overview

11 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill from Kathmandu is the best way to experience the beauty of the Annapurna Region. Considered one of Nepal’s most popular destinations, this trekking trail covers approximately 110 kilometers. The trek’s highest point is 4130 meters, i.e., Annapurna Base Camp. Similarly, Poon Hill is the major highlight of the trek at 3210 meters. Upon reaching there, you will see the stunning sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Taking this trail, you will navigate terraced fields, lush forests, and traditional Gurung and Magar Villages. The key attractions are the panoramic views of snowcapped mountains and the warm hospitality of local people. Furthermore, if you are lucky, you can also see some rare animals and bird species. You can also experience the culture and traditions of the people residing there. If you plan on taking this trail, March to May and September to November are perfect.

However, taking this trail can be somehow challenging. You must go through two of the top destinations in the Annapurna Region. Thus, completing this in 11 days is difficult. You may not get a proper chance for acclimatization because of the day’s limitations.

Also, the continuous hike for 6 to 8 hours a day can be another difficulty for you. The weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable. You may also encounter rainfall or cold temperatures anytime on your trek.

Hot Springs at Jhinu Danda

After days of trekking, the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda offer a relaxing and therapeutic experience. Soaking in the warm waters surrounding nature is a rejuvenating treat for tired muscles.

Best time to trek ABC

The best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. Apart from that season, we recommend not trekking during other seasons.

Spring

Spring is the most popular trekking season, from March to May. During this period, the weather is generally stable, with moderate temperatures. You will also see blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers in this season. This adds vibrant colors to the landscapes. The clear skies offer the best views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. You will also see the trail with many people. This can provide you with more safety along with a sense of security.

Autumn

From September to November, autumn is another excellent time to trek to ABC. After the monsoon season, the skies clear up, offering crisp, unobstructed views of the mountains. The weather during autumn is cool and comfortable, perfect for long days of trekking. The major festivals of Nepal, Dashain, and Tihar, also fall during this season. Thus, you can experience the culture of Nepal in more depth if you trek in autumn.

While spring and autumn are the most favorable times for trekking to ABC, some trekkers also choose to go during the winter months of December to February. This period offers a unique experience with snow-covered trails and a quieter trekking environment. However, the temperatures can be pretty cold.

Similarly, the monsoon season, from June to August, is generally not recommended due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and a higher risk of landslides.

Annapurna Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

In terms of difficulty, the Annapurna Base Camp is a moderate trek. It is accessible to all trekkers, from beginners to experienced ones. You can complete the trek with a reasonable fitness level. The trek covers an average hike of 6 to 7 hours daily. You will make your way through rugged terrain and diverse landscapes.

Ascent to Poon Hill itself involves a steep climb, but it is short and manageable with a steady pace. The highest point reached in 3210 meters.
Thus, there is also a chance for you to get altitude sickness.

Although the trek is relatively moderate, it does require some fitness and preparation. Also, the unpredictable weather can be a problem for you. You may sometimes encounter rainfall or even feel a drop in temperature during this trek.

Besides that, the language barrier can make trekking a little more complicated, although the trek falls in the list of Nepal’s top 10 accessible trekking destinations. Overall, proper preparation is essential if you are trekking towards the Annapurna Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.
