Island Peak Climbing
The most famous mountain to climb in the Everest region is the Island Peak. Nepal Mountaineering Association has identified more than 25 mountains as Trekking Peaks. Among these peaks, Island Peak is considered as the most famous and the perfect mountain to climb before expedition of higher altitude mountains like Everest (8848.86 m).

Island Peak is also locally known as Imja Tse. It is located in the middle of the Lhotse Shar and mountains. Therefore, it is referred as an island. Climbing the Island Peak is possible for beginners to veterans. However, you must have sound physical fitness and stamina. The most essential requirement for this climbing activity is strong cardio – vascular ability. The route to summit of Island Peak requires fixed rope assisted climbing. In some sections, you have to cross the crevasses by using the ladder.
The final stretch before summit is on the vertical ridgeline. Enjoy the amazing scenery of mountains like Lhotse, Makalu, Amadablam, Thamserku, etc. from the top. Interestingly, you can’t see Mt. Everest from the top of Island Peak even if it is about 10 kilometers apart. The Lhotse Wall blocks the view of Mt. Everest.

There are two routes to complete the Everest High Passes Trek with Island Peak Climb itinerary. The clockwise route follows the Thame Renjo La Pass section and anticlockwise route follows the Dingboche Kong Ma La Pass section. Our itinerary follows the clockwise route. It ensures better acclimatization for this adventure. By the time trekkers reach the Island Peak Base Camp, they would have already reached places above 5000 m multiple times.
Reach the tranquil blue turquoise lake the Gokyo Lake by crossing the Renjo La Pass (5360 m). Relish the scenery of mountains including the sight of Mt. Makalu from the top of Renjo La Pass. The second pass is the Chola Pass (5420 m) which is in between the Everest Base Camp Trek route and Gokyo Valley. Trekkers explore the Everest Base Camp (5364 m) and head towards Island Peak Base Camp via Kong Ma La Pass (5535 m). Who are eligible for this tour?
A seasoned or experienced hikers ages between 18-45 years old are eligible for this tour even if you have no prior climbing experience. It is also for those travelers who have strong determination and ability to tackle with high altitudes environment.
Any experienced hikers who wish to climb 6000 meters peak in the Everest region as their first mountaineering experience.

Itinerary
Arrival in Nepal and transfer to the hotel
Upon your arrival in Kathmandu airport, our office representative will greet you by fresh garland or khada and then transfer you to a hotel.
After checking in and taking a rest at hotel, office representative will introduce with your guide and give a briefing about your Everest Three High Passes Trek with Island Peak Climbing.
At the same time, your guide will also check your trekking and climbing gears. If you need to purchase any additional items, he’ll assist you to find at nearby shops in Thamel.
You will have free time to stroll around vibrant Thamel before settling in for an overnight stay at your hotel.
Flight to Lukla and Trek to Phakding (2,610m) - 3 hrs trek
Your flight to Lukla is scheduled for early in the morning to avoid potential weather disruptions that could avoid your trip plan.
Your guide will pick you up early morning from your hotel then take you at the airport for thrilling Lukla’s flight.
Upon reaching Lukla, you will meet your porter if you have added in your package and begin your hike to Phakding. Along the way between we will take a break about 1 hour for lunch. Today’s hike will be a gentle 3 hours walk along the scenic Dudh Koshi River.
You’ll spend your first night in Phakding at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level.
Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) - 6/7 hrs trek
Wake up at 6:30 am and get ready for our second day hike. After a hearty breakfast at our lodge, we start our journey towards Namche Bazaar by crossing server daring suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River.
After Monjo, we will enter Sagarmatha National park, established in 19th of July 1976 to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Today, you can see the first glimpse of Mt. Everest along the way if the weather is clear.
From the entrance gate of National park, a steep climb leads you up to Namche Bazaar. It is a bustling town of the Everest region where you can find best restaurants and pub bars above 3,440 meters. You will stay overnight in Namche Bazaar at a local teahouse.
Acclimatization Hike to Everest View Hotel
After reaching 3000 meters it is recommended to have a rest day to adopt your body with high altitudes.
Today, you will visit some important places of Namche Bazaar to acclimatize your body. At the first part, you will visit Sherpa Musuem and memorial park. From park, you can see the stunning views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kwangde, and the Dudh Koshi Valley below. Then after, you will continue your uphill walk to visit Syangboche airport which is known as the highest airport in Nepal.
From there, you will ascent about an hour to visit the Everest View Hotel. You will witness the best view of Mt. Everest from Everest view hotel with the sip of hot coffee/tea. Everest view hotel is situated at an elevation of 3880 meters that offers luxury rooms with best available amenities for tourists. It is a highest elevated hotel in the world.
After spending a moment at Everest View Hotel, you will walk down to your hotel and take rest.
Stay overnight at teahouse in Namche Bazaar.
Trek to Thame (3,820m) - 5/6 hrs trek
Today, you will bypass the busy Everest base camp trek route and heading towards the peaceful Thame village.
After having breakfast, start your trek by following the Bhote Koshi River through dense forests of rhododendrons and pines. Along the way, you will pass through the beautiful stupa at Phurtse before descending steeply to the Khumbu Hydroelectric Plant.
Thereafter, you will walk a gradual downhill to get the charming and peaceful Thame village. It is a traditional village settled by Sherpa community. This village is also a hometown of legendary mountaineers like Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Appa Sherpa. Form this village you can witness the stunning views of mountains.

Trek to Marlung (4,210m) - 4/5 hrs trek
Today is another exciting day on the Everest Three Passes Trek with Island Peak Climbing awaits us. After breakfast, we leave the peaceful Thame village behind and venture deeper into the remote valleys of the Khumbu region.
Today’s trail follows an ancient Tibetan trade route that offers a sense of history with every step. As you ascend through Thame Teng you will pass through smaller Sherpa settlements like Chanakpa and Taranga, you’re surrounded by traditional stone houses, prayer wheels, and Mani walls etched with centuries of Himalayan culture.
Gradually, the landscape transforms into open pastures and alpine meadows. The glacial streams and the occasional yak bell breaks the serene silence of your journey.
This section of the trail remains largely untouched and making it a peaceful and secluded experience. After walking about 4 to 5 hours, we reach the remote mountain village called Marlung. It is nestled beneath towering ridgelines. Though the village offers only a few modest teahouses, its raw and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal place to rest and acclimatize for the journey ahead.
You will reach Marlung at lunch time and stay overnight at this village for proper acclimatization before attempting Renjo la pass. And the next day you will trek to Lumde from Marlung.

Trek to Lungden (4,368m) - 3/4 hrs trek
Today’s trek is relatively short which is only about 3 to 4 hours gentle walk.
Lungden is the last stop before attempting the Renjo La Pass, one of the three highest passes of your journey.
This scenic trail to Lungden follows the Bhote Koshi River, passing through glacial-carved valleys, scattered yak pastures, ancient Mani walls, and remote stone houses. Along the hike, it also offers a raw glimpse into Sherpa life.
You can see the breathtaking views of the mountains from Lungden village. At your free time, you can also explore the village around and interact with locals.
Spend the night at a local teahouse in Lungden, soaking in the calm of this remote mountain village. Tomorrow marks a significant milestone in your Three Passes adventure as you take on the first of the trio — the Renjo La Pass.

Trek to Gokyo (4,790m) via Renjo La Pass (5,360m) - 7/8 hrs trek
Today you are going to cross the first challenging Renjo La Pass starting from Lungden village. The first part of the trail begin with a gentle walk that steadily grow steeper as you approach the pass. From the top of Renjo la – 5,360 meters you can see the breathtaking views of the towering peaks like Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Cho Oyu. The shimmering waters of Dudh Pokhari and the villages around impressed you.
The trail from Renjo La top to Gokyo valley is icy and slippery. Therefore, be careful while descending after soaking in the incredible nature beauty.
After reaching Gokyo, we will stay a night at teahouse.
Rest day at Gokyo - Hike to Gokyo Ri
You will have a rest day at Gokyo. After breakfast, you will hike up to the Gokyo Ri viewpoint, which is at 5,357 meters elevation. From here, you can get a surreal view of the Gokyo Valley and surrounding mountains. Similarly, you can get incredible views of Thonak Tsho Lake and Ngozuma Tsho Lake.
The Ngozumpa Tsho Glacier lies three kilometers north of Gokyo. Five minutes from the glacier lies the Scoundrel’s viewpoint, which offers mesmerizing mountain views. Likewise, you can also see the Cho Oyu Base Camp and the Ngozumpa Glacier. The Ngozumpa Glacier is one of the country’s longest glaciers. It flows down the Gokyo Valley and passes near the Gokyo Lakes.
Trek to Thangnak (4,750m) - 4/5 hrs trek
After resting at Gokyo Valley, you will resume your trek to Thangak. You will cross the Ngozumpa Glacier. Then, you will make several ascends and descends. The terrain becomes rougher and rockier, making the trek more difficult. The vegetation around the trekking route is sparse and barren.
The trail then descends to a valley on the eastern glacial moraine. A few hour’s walk from the second lake, you will arrive at Thangnak. You will stay overnight at a teahouse in Thangnak.
Trek to Dzongla (4,700m) via Cho La Pass (5,420m) - 7 hrs trek
You will begin our trek early in the morning, ascending to Cho La Pass and heading towards Dzongla. The Cho La Pass is at an altitude of 5,420 m. The trail ascending to the pass has steep sections, and you must also cross a glacier on the eastern side. As you get higher, the trail gets slippery, and the frozen rocks make the ascension more challenging.
Numerous colorful prayer flags adorn the top of the Cho La Pass. Similarly, you can get stunning views of Kyajo Ri, Numbur Himal, Tengkangpoche, Kangchung, and several other snow-capped peaks. Then, you will descend steeply by crevasses and alpine meadows to Dzongla.
Trek to Gorakshep (5,140m) - 6 hrs trek
Today is a bit long and tiring hike as you have to walk on high altitude terrains.
After hearty breakfast, you will start your hike along a rugged and awe-inspiring trail toward Gorakshep. The trek begins with a gentle descent through glacial moraines before connecting with the classic Everest Base Camp Trail at Lobuche (4,940 meters).
After reaching Lobuche, the terrain become rockier and more challenging as you trek alongside the impressive Khumbu Glacier. It is a largest glacier in Nepal.
Gorakshep is situated at 5140 meters above sea level and its offer a breathtaking views of towering peaks like Cholatse and Ama Dablam. It is also a last settlement before reaching Everest Base Camp.
You will overnight stay at Gorakhshep and visit Everest base camp and Kala Patthar tomorrow.
Visit Kala Patthar (5,600m) & Everest Base Camp (5,364m) then Trek down to Lobuche (4,910m) - 7/8 hrs trek
Your day begins early on this day as well. Today, you will first hike to Kala Patthar, a popular viewpoint. The viewpoint offers an even more spectacular view of Mount Everest than the Everest Base Camp. You will enjoy the sunrise view from Kala Patthar. It is one of the most beautiful sunrises you can observe. It is enchanting to see the golden sun rising amidst the snowy peaks.
Then, you will return to Gorakshep for breakfast. After breakfast, you will visit Everest base camp and trek down to Lobuche for another last pass next day.
And you will then trek down towards Lobuche and stay there overnight.
Trek to Chhukung (4,730m) via Kongma La Pass (5,535m) - 7/8 hrs trek
From Lobuche, you will descend to Chhukung via Kongma La Pass. The Kongma La Pass takes us to an elevation of 5,535 meters. It is the most challenging of the three passes. The trail goes alongside the frozen lakes, and a mummy-wrapped crane denotes the pass. You must make a steep uphill climb and cross a few glacial sections. Once you reach the top of the pass, you can see Mount Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Baruntse, and more.
After descending from the Kongma La Pass, you will head east of Nigyang Khola Valley. Then, you will enter the Chukkung village. No permanent settlements are here, but you can see beautiful green pastures. Likewise, you can see Island Peak and Amphu Lapcha from here.
Trek to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m) - 4 hrs trek
After breakfast, you began our hike towards the north side and walk along the valley next to the Lhotse glacier’s rocky edge. After a short walk by the river, you will climb for about 1 hour to reach Island Peak Base Camp. Today, you will stay a night at the tented camps in Island Peak base camp with our team.
You’ll have a brief training session to learn important climbing skills. This includes how to use equipment like ice axes, climbing boots, crampons, harnesses, and ropes, getting us ready for the climb ahead.

Summit Day; Climb Island peak (6,189m) and back to Chhukung (4,730m) - 8-10 hrs
Today is your big adventure day! If the weather is in a favor, you’ll set off early in the morning to climb Island Peak, which stands at 6,187 meters (20,299 feet). Starting from Camp 1, we’ll climb through a gully and move towards the right. Crossing a wide stone field, you’ll navigate the ridge and glacier with its crevasses.
After the successful summit, you’ll retrace your way back to base camp and return to Chhukung on the same day. It’s going to be an exciting and challenging journey!
Trek to Tengboche (3,870m) - 7 hrs trek
After breakfast, you’ll begin our hike back down the trail. It takes about an hour from Chhukung to reach Dingboche.
Then, you’ll follow the main Everest trail through Shomare and Pangboche. After Pangboche, you’ll cross the river and head uphill to Tengboche for the night.
If you’re feeling energetic, visit the Monastery or the local bakery. Otherwise, a good night’s sleep will help you recover for another long day tomorrow.
Trek to Monjo (2,835m) - 6 hrs trek
Your today’s journey starts with a descent walk to Phunki Tenga. It is a small village that offers a beautiful mountain views with few cozy teahouses. Then after, you will hike through beautiful rhododendron forests and crosses traditional wooden bridge over the Dudh Koshi River.
Along the way you will enjoy the scenic views of the mountains and climb up to Sansa. After reaching Sansa, the path descends to the lively town of Namche Bazaar. Continuing downhill, you finally arrive at Monjo. Overnight stay at a local teahouse in Monjo.
Trek to Lukla (2,840m) - 4/5 hrs trek
Today is the last day of your Everest High Passes Trek with Island Peak climbing journey. Â The walk from Monjo to Lukla is about 4 to 5 hours only, covering a distance of 9.5KM.
After breakfast, you will retrace your way back to Lukla along the scenic trails that passes through green forest and Sherpa villages.
After reaching Lukla, settle into a local teahouse. Relax your body after several days of hiking. . In the evening, celebrate a farewell dinner with your trekking crew to mark the success of your incredible adventure.
Fly back to Kathmandu
You will take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu. But during the peak trekking seasons, all the Lukla flights fly to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap. From Ramechhap, you must take a 4-5-hour drive to Kathmandu. The weather at Lukla is infamous for changing rapidly and causing flight delays or cancellations. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel. You can spend your remaining time as you please.
Departure from Nepal
Today is your last day in Nepal.
Our vehicle and escorts will be on standby to drop you off at the international airport three hours before your scheduled flight back home.
