Highlights of Tilicho Lake Trek
Overview
Tilicho Lake Trekking takes you through Ancient Jomsom, with the venerated Lake of Tilicho, is said to be the highest in the world…and crossing Thorong La at 5,416m presents a wonderful challenge Trek which is a real test more for the mind than the body…but the glorious skyline shows off silver, gray and white mountains that glitters on a lovely weather day and the diverse ethnic communities we meet up on the way give us some sort of idea of the world we know and the world we are not familiar with…but want so much to learn off…
Tilicho Lake at an altitude of (4,949m) is a well-known place for pilgrimages. Hence, as we go to the high altitude to triumph over the view of the lake is not an easy task, but this trip is truly exciting, thrilling and more or less rewarding. Though Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a challenging trekking route it is one of the finest trekking routes in the Annapurna region.
Our 15 days Tilicho Lake trek displays a scenic view of much of the eastern side of the epic world-famous Annapurna circuit with sublime natural beauty, cultural and traditional values, stunning waterfalls and running clean water streams, and attractive floras and faunas.
Our trip begins with a cruise from Kathmandu to Chame via Besishar, the path offers you fantastic views of gigantic peaks including Mt. Annapurna (8,091m) – 10th highest mountain of world, Mt Dhaulagiri, (8,167m)-worlds 7th highest, Manaslu,( 8,163m)- worlds 8th highest, and Machhapuchhre at ( 6,993m ).
On the way to Tilicho Lake, you get serene views of waterfalls and experience hiking across airy suspension bridges. But this route is a pretty tough trail. You have to walk at alpine altitudes and you have to cross the Thorong La pass at (5,416m). The rocky trails, high hills and hiking through rivers tend to pose challenges. But the rewarding landscapes give meaningful joy to accept the geographical obstacles.
Going through Manang is special as you can enjoy the natural beauty of this particular area. As we head to Upper Tilicho Lake, you will pass through several villages where you can haul up and learn about the culture and traditions of the local folks. After reaching Tilicho Base Camp and then finally ascending Tilicho Lake, you can view this superb Lake right in front of your very eyes.
After digesting the beauty of Tilicho Lake, we make a beeline for Muktinath Temple – a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. We must cross Thorang La pass (5,416m) on the way to Muktinath temple and go through some pretty villages. On the way, you will enjoy the thrills of altitude and enjoy the culture of people living on the way. Finally, reaching Muktinath and spending some beautiful moments at this quiet place, the landscapes here are simply stunning. We will then return to the city of lakes – Pokhara via Jomsom.

This headquarters is the center from where the daily usable commodities are supplied to the different villages and numerous towns. Stay overnight at a lodge.

After breakfast, we take a local jeep on sharing from Besishar, our journey to Chame leads us through picturesque landscapes, encompassing lush jungles and terrace farms lining the scenic Marsyangdi River. Along the way, we’ll encounter the tranquil Jagat Bazaar before making a brief stop at Dharapani (1860m) to check our trekking permit, as it serves as the primary entry point for the Annapurna Trek. After this, we’ll continue our jeep ride until we finally arrive in Chame.
Chame itself boasts a vibrant bazaar and offers the perfect opportunity to unwind beside the rejuvenating hot springs that grace the banks of the Marsyangdi River. From this vantage point, the captivating views of Annapurna II (7,937m) and Lamjung Himal (6,932m) unfold before us, while a glimpse behind reveals the awe-inspiring Manaslu (8,154m) and Peak 29 (7,833m). From the wide plains of the Sabje Khola Valley, Annapurna IV (7525m.) also becomes visible. Just beyond this point, you cross the considerably reduced flow of the Marshyangdi Khola via a wooden bridge to the tiny village of Mungji. After a short steep climb, you reach Manang which is a surprisingly large village for this remote mountain region. Stay overnight at a lodge.

One path maintains the altitude, traversing the slopes towards a place where the valley is narrow; the other continues to ascend towards the line of the ridge.
The former is the old path, and is much more difficult as it goes on steep screed; the latter is the new path that goes a completely different way. Continue along the new path, reach a high crest, and descend on switchbacks carved out through the screed slopes to a side valley of the main valley. At its bottom is a brook. Traveller’s Review
In the autumn of 2018 (November), my friend and I from Japan did the Tilicho Lake with Thorong La Pass Trek in Nepal. Our guide, Prakash, and a porter, Ramesh, escorted us throughout the journey. They were both very experienced and kind. Overall, we had a great trip to Tilicho Lake with the support of the Glorious Himalaya team. We are delighted with their service and planning to do the Manaslu Circuit trek next time with this agency.
