Is Nar Phu Valley Restricted?

Yes, Nar Phu Valley has been on Nepal’s restricted areas list since 2002. The Nepal government has listed it to protect this remote region’s unique culture, natural beauty, and environment. Listing it as a restricted area and limiting the number of visitors, the government aims to preserve the traditional lifestyle of the local communities. These communities are heavily influenced by Tibetan culture and have remained relatively untouched by modernization.

Some parts of Nar Phu Valley are linked with the Tibetan (China) border, which may raise security issues. That is why access to the area is controlled by Nepal’s government. Thus, by designating it as a restricted region, the government can monitor and manage travelers who enter the area, helping to maintain both national security and the preservation of its cultural and environmental heritage.

Additionally, the restriction helps safeguard the ecosystems and diverse wildlife in the area. As this place is home to blue sheep and the exclusive snow leopard, protecting them is essential. If you are trekking toward this region, you have to get a special permit. You can obtain it through a registered trekking agency. Also, as a restricted area, you are not allowed to trek this trek without a guide. The restriction status just not helps to preserve the natural beauty of the region but also protects the diverse flora and fauna the place offers.

Nar Phu Valley Trek Difficulty

The Nar Phu Valley trek is considered to be one of the most challenging treks in the Annapurna Region. Compared to other treks in Nepal, there are several factors of difficulty that increase the level of challenge for the trekkers trying to complete Nar Phu Valley. So let’s explain some of the factors that will make the Nar Phu Valley Trek difficult.

Altitude Sickness

With the involvement of high altitude crossing over 5,300 meters, this trek offers you a high risk of altitude sickness. For new trekkers, this might be one of the biggest problems to overcome. The trekkers must know the appropriate ways to acclimate. It is also important for them to take medicines like Diamox to a higher altitude, such as Nar Phu Phedi.

Rugged Terrains

Another factor that makes Nar Phu Valley difficult is the trek through rugged terrains. You have to make it through diverse landscapes and continuous ascends and descends. The steep climbs, slippery slopes, rocky ridges, etc, will make the trekking tougher, especially for beginner-level trekkers.

Long Duration

The continuous hiking of 9 days can also be tiring. The climate can be quite harsh, with cold temperatures and unpredictable weather. You will experience long hiking days, which can be physically demanding. The area’s remoteness means you will be trekking in places far from modern amenities and facilities.

Total Distance of Nar Phu Valley Trek

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is one of the moderate-level treks due to its trek duration. The total distance of the trek ranges from 70km directly, but when the trekkers are moving from teahouse to teahouse, they might have to cover at least 90 to 95 km.

The trek combines different types of landscapes, from tough landscapes to rough and rugged terrains, rocky ridges, steep ascents, glacial moraines, and snowy mountains. Despite the long distance and tough conditions, the Nar Phu Valley trek is quite rewarding in the end.

Remoteness

You should also be prepared for a lack of basic services. With the limited facilities, we recommend you carry a basic first aid kit. Preparing for emergencies is also crucial, as finding instant help can be difficult. The local language may be a barrier, as English is not widely spoken in the remote villages. Overall, this trek requires good physical fitness and mental toughness.

How to avoid Altitude Sickness At High Pass

Altitude sickness is one of the major obstacles of the Nar Phu Valley trek. The trekkers suffer from altitude sickness since the level of oxygen is lower compared to the required level of the body. Here are a few ways to avoid Altitude sickness during the Nar Phu Valley Trek.

  • Acclimate gradually and cover 500 m at most during each day. Do not rush towards the summit.
  • Acclimatize with the conditions whenever you get the chance. Always trek high and drop back down to sleep.
  • Make sure you are hydrated all the time during the trek.
  • Eat the food with proper nutrients. The food should have vitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates.
  • Make sure you avoid products with caffeine and alcohol, which invites the possibility of altitude sickness.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one of the key aspects of a trek that any trekkers planning to trek at a high level must be wary of. During these high-level treks there are quite uncertainties, especially in the remote and isolated regions. Hence it is best to purchase the best travel insurance that covers all sorts of adventure activities, which likely can incur some medical expenses. While purchasing Travel insurance, make sure the policy includes medical evacuation in case of an accident, as medical facilities may be limited in remote areas. Some policies may have exclusions or limitations, so it’s important to read the fine print carefully before purchasing. Also, consider the cost of the policy and whether it’s worth it for your trip.

By purchasing travel insurance that covers trekking in isolated regions and medical evacuation, you can rest assured that you’re protected in case of an accident or emergency. However, there are certain conditions where the trekkers can’t issue travel insurance for high-altitude trekking. They are:

Altitude Limitations: Many policies have maximum altitude limits, typically around 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Trekking above this limit might not be covered.

Pre-existing Medical Conditions: If you have a pre-existing condition like heart problems or respiratory issues, it could be excluded, especially if it’s aggravated by altitude.

Extreme Activities: Some policies don’t cover “extreme” activities, which might include high-altitude trekking, especially if it involves technical climbing or glacier travel.

A Typical Day on Nar Phu Trek

We will start our day early, usually around 6:30-7:00 AM, with a hearty breakfast at our teahouse or camp. After breakfast, we will pack our gear and prepare for the day’s trek. The morning hike will often involve ascending steep trails or navigating rocky paths as we make our way through the stunning landscapes of the Nar Phu Valley. We will encounter picturesque views and traditional villages, which will keep us engaged and motivated throughout the day.

Lunch is typically enjoyed in a local teahouse or at a scenic spot along the trail, where we can rest and recharge. In the afternoon, we will continue trekking. After covering a certain distance, we will finally reach the destination in the late afternoon or early evening. After getting to the designated teahouses, we have time to relax, explore the area, and enjoy a well-deserved dinner. After dinner, we will discuss our trip with fellow travelers and then go to bed early.

The typical day of the Nar Phu Valley trek consists of early morning breakfast, relentless trekking, lunch, clicking photos, reaching the new teahouse, dinner, and then sleeping. For Nar Phu Valley, the trek duration ranges from 10 to 15 days, while trekkers have to trek for six to eight hours daily, which will take a toll on your body.

Tashi Lhakhang Gompa

Best Time For Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. There are a number of factors that increase trek difficulty, which can be managed by timing the trek during the ideal trekking conditions. The best times for the Nar Phu Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). So let’s get into them.

Spring

Spring (March to May) is one of the best times to trek in the Nar Phu Valley. The weather is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm during the day. The blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers add vibrant color to landscapes. During Spring, a number of programs, side activities, and competitions are also engaging in the trekking destination. Compared to other trekking seasons, Spring invites more crowds, which is why it is essential to book the trek early.

Autumn

Like spring, autumn provides stable, dry weather with clear skies and crisp temperatures. This season ensures excellent visibility of the Himalayan peaks and comfortable trekking conditions. Although it is a popular time for trekking, the beautiful weather and breathtaking scenery make it a rewarding choice. Also, as a festive season, you can have a detailed understanding of local culture and traditions.

Off Seasons

In contrast, summer (June to August) brings heavy monsoon rains, making the trails muddy and slippery, increasing the risk of landslides. Winter (December to February) is characterized by harsh, cold temperatures and snow, making trekking challenging and less accessible. Therefore, spring and autumn are the most recommended seasons for the Nar Phu Valley Trek.

Permits Required for Nar Phu Valley Trek

For the Nar Phu Valley Trek, you will need to obtain several permits to ensure a smooth and legal trekking experience. Here’s a detailed breakdown of each permit required:

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The ACAP permit is necessary for trekking in the Annapurna Conservation Area, which includes parts of the Nar Phu Valley. It helps fund conservation efforts and protects the area’s natural resources. The ACAP permit can be obtained at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu, the ACAP office in Pokhara, or the District Administration Office (DAO) in the Annapurna region. The cost for the ACAP permit is $25 USD per person.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

The Nar Phu Valley is classified as a restricted area due to its remote location and unique cultural significance. The RAP is required to regulate and control trekking in these sensitive areas. The RAP can be obtained from the Immigration Office in Kathmandu. It is advisable to arrange this permit through a registered trekking agency, as it involves specific regulations and group requirements. The cost for the RAP is approximately $100 USD per person for a 10-day permit. Additional charges may apply for extended stays.

Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) Card – Optional

The TIMS card is required for all trekkers in Nepal to help manage trekking activities and ensure safety. You can obtain the TIMS card from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) office. The TIMS card costs USD 17 per trekkers.

Food on the Nar Phu Valley Trek

Apart from the view of the stunning region and the chance for cultural immersion, the food really increases the attraction of this trek. Since the trekking trails pass from low-altitude developed regions to high-altitude remote places, the trekkers can taste different types of meals. Most trekkers prefer local Nepali produce, while there are also options for Western cuisines, but not so much in the remote villages. Trekkers in the Nar Phu Valley will get three daily meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It starts early in the morning before the start of the initial trek. You should never skip your breakfast, especially if you have a long day of trek ahead. You can expect options such as oatmeal, porridge, eggs, bread, and sometimes pancakes for breakfast. Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are commonly available to warm and energize your day.

Lunch

After the initial three to four hours of trek, the trekkers will stop for lunch in a lovely place where the guide will take them. Lunch is typically served at teahouses or lodges along the route. You can enjoy a range of dishes, including dal bhat, noodle soups, sandwiches, and pasta. The meals are designed to be hearty and provide the energy needed for your trek.

Dinner

It’s for your dinner after arriving at the teahouse late in the evening. Dinner usually includes a selection of hearty dishes like dal bhat, rice, vegetables, and occasionally meat or fish, depending on the location and availability. You might also find options such as soups, stews, and noodle dishes. Meals are often cooked using locally available ingredients. It adds to the authentic experience of trekking in the Nar Phu Valley.

Communication, Electricity, and Water During the Trek

Communication

During the Nar Phu Valley Trek, communication options are limited. Mobile network coverage varies along the trail. You might have intermittent coverage in some areas, especially around larger villages, but service can be unreliable in more remote sections. In terms of sim cards, you have two options: NTC and Ncell.  These SIM cards cost about Nrs 200. There are a few alternative ways to communicate if you don’t get a signal at high altitudes: Satellite phones, which don’t require a mobile battery, social media when you have WIFI, and in-reach devices that use satellite for two-way messaging.

Electricity

Electricity availability is basic and varies depending on where you are along the trek. In most teahouses, electricity is available for charging devices, but it is usually generated by solar power or diesel generators, so it might be limited or available only at specific times of the day. Furthermore, you need to pay for the services of electricity which costs about Nrs 50 to 200 per hour. Be prepared for occasional power outages, and bring a power bank to ensure you can charge your devices when necessary. Make sure to carry alternative charging devices like power banks and solar chargers, which can help you charge your electrical equipment during the trek.

Drinking Water

Access to clean drinking water is generally available along the trek, but it is advisable to use water purification methods to ensure safety. You can buy bottled water at teahouses, but it is more environmentally friendly to use a water purifier or purification tablets. Some teahouses provide boiled or filtered water, which is a safer option than drinking untreated water from streams.

Water resources are a very important aspect that needs attention, as trekkers need pure drinking water to stay healthy and survive. In the lower altitudes, the water resources are healthy, with plenty of options for drinking water sources. However, as the trekkers start climbing trek, the water resources start diminishing. The major sources were tap water and handle pumps, which are ineffective for drinking.

There are natural springs of water that are amazing for resting and rejuvenation. However, they are not ideal for drinking. The only ideal source of water that is for drinking is available in the teahouse. They can provide you with filters and boiled drinking water, for which you have to pay a little extra.

Things To Know during Nar Phu Valley Trek

Guide and Porter

The guide is mandatory for the Nar Phu Valley trek, as solo trekking is prohibited. However, porters are not mandatory, but you should always hire porters, as they will provide support and relief during your trek. Guides are helpful for navigation, safety, and security, while porters carry heavy bags in the rocky ridges and snowy mountains, making your hike easier.

Hiring guides and porters is also important to motivate them to provide services. Providing tips for their hard work will help them financially and will also help develop the local economy. Hiring guides and porters is for your own benefit for tough treks like the Nar Phu Valley trek.

Money Exchange

Whenever you are trekking in tough settlements like Nar Phu Valley, make sure you exchange your foreign currency with the local Nepali one. You can exchange currency in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, but as you start climbing the altitude, there is a lack of banks, ATM machines, etc.

Furthermore, at high altitudes, teahouses only accept local currency. Hence, make sure you exchange your currency whenever you are in Kathmandu, or Pokhara, so that you don’t come into problems at the high altitude.

Visa

In order to enter Nepal and experience the Nar Phu Valley trek, the trekkers need a legal visa. The trekkers will receive a visa in the Tribhuvan International Airport.

When you arrive at the airport, visit a government office to get your Nepal stay visa. You need to submit the required documents, pay the visa fee, and receive your visa.  To get your visa, you must have:

  • A valid passport that is at least six months old
  • Two passport-size photos
  • The address of your hotel
  • Cash in local currency to pay for your hotel fee

You must pay the visa fee in cash, and the amount may change. The visa fees are:

  • 15 days: US$30
  • 30 days: US$50
  • 90 days: US$125

Alternative to Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek is one of the underrated treks in Nepal, which lies in a restricted area in Nepal. If the trekkers don’t want to experience this trek, they can find a few alternatives that are similar to the Nar Phu Valley Trek.

Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively new and less crowded alternative to the Nar Phu Valley Trek, offering stunning views of the Annapurna range, including Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). This trek is quite underrated and is only appreciated by complete trek lovers who have experienced other trekking destinations.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

The Poon Hill Trek is a shorter option, perfect for those with limited time. It rewards trekkers with breathtaking sunrises over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from the iconic Poon Hill viewpoint. This trek is ideal for beginners due to the easy trekking experience and the chance to see stunning views.

Tsum Valley Trek

Another alternative to the Nar Phu Valley Trek is the Tsum Valley Trek. This trek also falls in the restricted place of the Annapurna region. The people in Tsum Valley practice Tibetan-style Buddhism, which is unique to this area.

Rolwaling Trek

Another alternative to the Tsum Valley trek is the Rolwaling trek. Starting in Jagat, an 8 to 9-hour drive from Kathmandu, the trek ends in Lukla via Thame village, linked to Everest climbers. Trekkers enjoy diverse landscapes, from lush forests to rugged terrains, and tackle Tashi Lapcha Pass at 5,755 meters for panoramic views.

Nar Phu Valley Trek Packing List

To pack for the Nar Phu Valley trek, you should include the same items as for any trek in Nepal. The only extra items you may need are crampons for snow and a good four-season sleeping bag and mat. While these items are helpful on other treks, they are essential in places where lodges are very basic.
