What Permits Are Required for the Everest Base Camp Trek?
For the standard Everest Base Camp Trek, trekkers should obtain the following two permits:
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
These two permits serve different purposes. The local municipality permit supports the administration and management of the Khumbu region, while the Sagarmatha National Park permit is required to enter and trek inside the national park.
1. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit, also commonly referred to as the Khumbu Trek Card, is required for trekkers entering the Everest region through the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.
2. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit is required because the Everest Base Camp trekking route passes through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where Can You Get Everest Base Camp Trek Permits?
One of the most common questions among first-time trekkers is where they can obtain the required Everest Base Camp permits.
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
The local Khumbu permit is available through the Tourist Information Center in Lukla, according to the rural municipality’s current information. The permit is also handled at the Monjo checkpoint for trekkers entering the national park area.
Sagarmatha National Park Permit
You have two convenient options for obtaining the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit:
Option 1: Kathmandu

As of today, 21st August 2026, TIMS card isn’t necessary for the Everest Base Camp trek.
How Much Do Everest Base Camp Trek Permits Cost?
Permit fees are charged in Nepalese rupees and can change when government or local authorities revise their fees.
For foreign trekkers, the current published fees include:

What Documents Are Required for Everest Base Camp Trek Permits?
An original passport with a valid visa is the only required document to obtain Everest Base Camp Trek permits

Make sure the name and passport information used for your trekking documentation match your actual passport.
Do You Need Travel Insurance to Get the Permits?
Travel insurance is not required to get the Everest Base Camp Trek permits. But travel insurance is extremely important for your financial and physical security because the trek reaches high altitude and evacuation can be expensive.
How Can You Obtain Everest Base Camp Trek Permits?
If you are arranging the trek independently, permits are obtained through the relevant government or local authority offices and checkpoints.
For the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, you can visit the Nepal Tourism Board Tourist Service Center at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu or obtain the permit at the Monjo entry point.

Are Everest Base Camp permits available online?
Neither of these EBC permits is available through a general online application. Trekkers should physically attend to collect permits at designated offices or checkpoints.
You should physically visit the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or the entry point at Monjo for Sagarmatha National Park entry permit.
For the Khumbu Trek Card, you should visit the Tourist Information Center in Lukla or Monjo.
How Long Are Everest Base Camp Trek Permits Valid?
Everest Base Camp Trek permits do not have an exact validity date or a fixed number of trekking days. It is used as a single entry whether it is a month-long trek or a short week trip.
For example, if your EBC Trek itinerary is 14 Days, your permits are valid for 14 Days only. If your itinerary is for a month or longer, your permits are valid for that duration.
However, the important point is that these permits are not unlimited in terms of multiple entries.
Once you have completed your trek and exited the relevant area, you should not assume that the same permit can be reused for another separate Everest-region trek.
Can You Use the Same Everest Base Camp Permit Twice?
You cannot use the same Everest Base Camp trek permits multiple times. A single-entry permit is only used for one-time entry.
For example, if you return to Kathmandu after the Everest trek, you cannot reuse the old entry permits for a completely new trek several months later.
A new entry will require the applicable permit again.
